Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N. C., SATURDAY, NOV. 1, 1941 Ground Broken for New Negro School Building Impressive ceremonies that fea tured a talk by Dr. Chas. G. Bewail, were held on Friday af ' ternoon when ground was broken for the construction of the new Colored school building in Tryon on the site of the old building destroyed by fire last year. Rev. C. R. White of St. Luke’s C. M. E. church opened the ceremonies with prayer and the Rev. Toomer of Garrison Chapel closed the meet ing with a benediction. Superintendent M. B. Caldwell of Tryon schools presided and broke the ground in the absence of District Manager D. M. Rea of Charlotte VTA office who was not able to be present. The Rev. Charles G. Sewall, religious, educational, welfare lead er, gave the principal address in which he stressed the importance of the home, church and school to i the community. Just as a house •jioes not make a home without the love, affection, cooperation, etc., of members of the family, neither does a building make a school. There must be cooperation among students, parents and teachers to create a desire for an education in order to make a better living, in order to live a better, richer, happier life, and in order to be come better citizens of the com munitv and nation. J. M. Ripley of Forest City, construction engineer, made a few remarks in which he said the WPA and school authorities were going to erect the best building they could for the money at their dis pisal.
