C., TUESDAY, NOV. 11, 1941 Erskine Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary At the happy occasion of the Semi-Centennial Dinner of the Memorial Congregational ■thurch at Oak Hall hotel Mon day night a very interesting and clever historical paper was read by Ralph Erskine, son of the don or of the present church building and organ, and greetings and congratulations were extended on behalf of the Presbyterian, Bap tist, Episcopal, and Methodist churches by their respective pas tors, and by ministers who have recently supplied the pulpit of the Congregational church, including Rev. C. P. Burnett, retired and long time rector of the Church of the Holy Cross; Rev. George F. Taylor, D. D., of Converse Col lege, and Rev. Charles G. Sewall whose life is intimately associated with the church. A message was read from Rev. Kerriscn Juniper, D. D., of the Congregational v church, Ormand, Fla. ■ The following former pastors letters of congratulations: Rev. T. T. Holway, Duncan, Van couver Is.; Rev. William B. O’Neill, Holland, Va.; Rev. John Brittan Clark, D. D., Cumberland, Md.; and similar letters were received from former members and frienuJ now absent: Miss Mary Drew, Claremont, Cal.; Mrs. Winfred Putnam Brown, daughter of the late Albert S. Putnam, New York City: W. C. Corcoran. Lancaster, S. C.; Dr. Homer H. Goodell, Memphis, Tenn.; and Mrs. John Beaumont, Detroit, Mich. A tele gram was read from Nelson Jack son, Jr.„ superintendent of the Continved on Back Page —»— Wednesday, Nov. 12th, Is War Against Waste Day This is the day that applies particularly to women. We must watch waste cf food, careless throwing away of paper bags, and metal objects. We must take care of what we have, buy sensibly— and thus prevent unnecessary waste. Now we have to save our supplies. We must learn to use substitutes, and accept simplified products. We haven’t enough ma terials for our defense needs and our civilian needs together. MEETS TONIGHT, 7:45 The Tryon School of Religion will hold its sixth session tonight at the Church of the Holy Cross at 7:45. President E. M. Gwath mey of Converse college will lecture on the Book of Esther and the Feast of Purim. Noted Lectur To Speak In Spartanburg Wednesday Dr. Gerald Wendt, noted scien tist, will lecture at Wofford col lege chapel on Wednesday night at 8:30. He will discuss social implications of the advancement of science, and will show three dimension motion pictures. Converse college and Wofford college student bodies will hear the lecture, which will also be open to the public at the lyceum admission price. “Scientists have done their job in making the world a more com fortable place; it is now up to the politicians and others charged with responsibility for the welfare of the race to make it a happier place,” Dr. Wendt is quoted as saying.
