E. Brantley of the Southern Company, ha s been •Mected secretary-treasurer of the Tryon School Bonded District to succeed Douglas S. Blois, accord ing to announcement by the chair man of the board, Nelson Jackson, Jr. Mr. Blois moved to Tuxedo last summer. Mr. Brantley was with the Tryon Motor company before going to the Southern Mer cerizing company. He is president of the Tryon Merchants associa tion, a member of the Rotary club, the Baptist Brotherhood and a leader of young people’s activities, including the presidency of the summer softball league for the past two seasons. NEW AIR BASE TO BE AT GREENVILLE Washington, Dec. 10. —The war Apartment today authorized con "structicn of seven bombardment air bases, to cost approximately $7,500,000 each, near Syracuse, N. Y.; Richond, Va.; Greenville, S. C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Walla Walla, Wash.; Rapid City, S. D.; and Columbus, Ohio. About 450 officers and 4,500 en listed men and 130 airplanes will be stationed at each base. The department said the con struction would vary somewhat but that each base would include approximately 60 enlisted men’s barracks, officers quarters for 400 bachelor officers, six enlisted men’s mess buildings, two or three hang ars about 120 feet by 200 feet, Continued on Back Page TRYON, N C„ THURSDAY, DEC. 11, 1941 Performance Tests Saturday, Jan. 10th Performance tests for typists, stenographers, and stenotypists will be given on Saturday, Janu ary 10, according to Dr. Frank T. de Vyver, North Carolina Merit System Supervisor. These tests are designed to complete the writ ten examinations given on Octo ber 11th, and are open only to those candidates who passed the written examinations for the posi tions of Typist Clerk, Junior Stenographer Clerk, Senior Steno grapher Clerk, Junior Stenotypist, and Senior Stenotypist. Appli cants who are to take the per formance test will be so notified as soon as possible. Oral interviews are also being scheduled now, according to Dr. de Vyver. These interviews are being given for two clerical posi tions. Principal General Clerk and Principal File Clerk, which re quires an oral interview as part of the examination. The inter views are given by a traveling board of examiners, and will be conducted at various places in North Carolina. The dates De cember 22-December 31 have been tentatively selected for these in terviews. Applicants will be noti fied of the time and place as soon as possible. Merchants Meet Tonight Tryon Merchants association will meet tonight at 8 o’clock at Missildine’s Hall. President R. E. Brantley said. Mlembers are urged to be present. $2.00 PER YEAR
