Arledge has asked the Bulletin to request to people to please be extra careful tl Awear with their Christmas uOjJß'ations. He urges them to keep lighted candles or matches away from trees, and don’t let the trees get too dry by keeping them in the house long after Christmas; don’t overload light cir_ cuits; don’t put tree near open fire place. He said members of the Tryon Fire department want to do everything possible to make this a Merry Christmas in Tryon without any accidents. Philadelphia Family Buys Tom Costa Place Mr. and Mrs. Robert A.I Franks rs Philadelphia have bought the Tom Costa place at the foot of Tryon mountain. This unique prop erty has a house of unusual rock construction and contains an in ti house with tropical plants au 9 flowers with something in bloom the year ’round. It is lo cated on a knoll with terraced front and back growing flowers, grapes and fruit trees. On one side is a swimming pool and on the other a private lake stocked with fish. Mr. and Mrs. Franks expect to move to Tryon in Janu ary, Mr. Costa stated today. Dance At Sunnydale Set For New Year’s Eve Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kerhulas have announced that a script dance with orchestra music will be held at Stmnydale on New Year’s Eve. TRYON, N C., FRIDAY, DEC. 19, 1941 Polk Defense Women Hear General J. M. Carson Mirs. C. P. Rogers, chairman of the women’s organizations of the County Defense Council pre sided at a meeting of interested women in the county, Thursday afternoon, at the Lanier Library. Brigadier General J. M. Carson, guest speaker told of the impor tant part the women are playing in the Defense Council of his home town in Connecticut. General Carson very forcefully stressed the fact that “We are in a fight to the finish.” That we must or ganize to defend ourselves in or der to back up the armed forces. Mrs. Rogers stressed the impor tance of conservation in the house hold, and also urged the various organizations which are already doing defense and relief work of any kind to carry on as usual, but to be ready for any emergency. MSs s Edna Calvert, superinten dent of St. Luke’s hosptial volun teered for herself and the nurses at the hospital to give instructions in heme nursing to everyone who wants this course. More definite plans are to be workecT out. Mrs. Helen Hedekin, Mrs. Martha Boone, and Mfiss Ethel Young, also volunteered to help in this program. The meeting closed with a plea from the chairman to “keep our chins up in the American way and to keep up our morale.” Nearly 1,400,000 of the nation’s farms have substituted electric lights for oil lamps in the past 6V2 years, reports the Rural Elec trification Administration. $2.00 PER YEAR
