Mc- Kaig, that he likes the Navy, es pecially since they put him under Petty Officer Rucker Durham of Tryon ..... Miss Helen Roberts gardener, reports eating ripe to matoes from the garden on Christ mas Day .... Some people don’t like this warm Christmas weather and hcpe it will snow soon . . . . Weatherman Creasman must be off somewhere visiting during the holidays, but Dr. Arthur, Smith’s instruments . show that half an inch of rain fell in Gillette Woods I last night. The temperature between 40 and 50 some thing .... Hong Kong, the British Chinese port has fallen to the Japs because cf water short age, and the Philippine Islands are under heavy assault. U. S. Wake Island has finally surrend ered. The Russians continue to have the Germans on the run, and the British have captured Bengasi from the German-Italian army in North Africa. Back Page $2.00 PER YEAR Basketball Game Tonight Between Tryon High and Last Year’s Varsity Members of last year’s Tryon high school varsity basketball team which won the Polk County Championship will play the pres ent Tryon high school team to night at 7:30 at the Tryon gym nasium. The former players are Frank McFarland, Jim Jackson, Steth Vining, Marion Green and Harold Taylor. The high school team will be chosen from Ed Beatson, Clarence Scoggins, Babe Brock, Jack Melton, Spurgeon Arledge, R. L. Williams, Jimmy Baker. Community Sing Popular The large crowd that turned cut for the Community Sing on Christmas Eve was testimony of the desire on the part of the peo ple to join in the spirit of Christ mas and getting together for unity of fellowship. The living tree in the park was attractively deco rated with colored electric lights. The local Negro choir, white high school students and the assembly in general joined in the singing of Christmas carols, America, God Bless America, and other songs. Edwin Beach of the Tryon high school was the director, assisted by C. J. Lynch, Mrs. Vincent MacKenzie and others. Plans are already being discussed for a big ger event next year.
