MRS. A. L. SHAPLEIGH
Mrs. Alfred L. Shapleigh, 66,
passed away at her home here on

w/' second heart attack. Funeral
arrangements are awaiting the
arrival of her sister, Mrs. W. Ir
ving Clark, of Worcester, Mass.,
who was a visiter here during the
recent illness of the deceased.
Mrs. Shapeligh was a well
known poetess and Bible teacher.
She taught an interdenomination
al class at her home in Tryon
until her illness. Her religious
poems have appeared many times
in the Moody Monthly, published
by the Moody Bible Institute of
Chicago, which had already accept
ed several poems to appear in the
near future. She came to Tryon
four years ago from Wheaton, 111.,
where she had retired as dean of
women at Wheaton College. For
many years she and her late hus
band, Dr. Alfred L. Shapleigh,
missionaries to China. After
Shapleigh and their three
died in China in the
early 1900,’s Mrs. Shapleigh car
ried on missionary work alone
and was in charge of the Foreign
Women’s Heme at Shanghai,
China. Later in this country un
der the China Inland Mission she
was in charge of Deputation work.
Besides her sister, the deceased
is survived bv two brothers, R. G.
Pratt of Worcester, Mass., and
Dr. F. H. Pratt of Wellesley
Hills, Mass.
