News^has been received in Try
of the death of Edgar C. Rowe
^*9 the Presbyterian hospital in
Chicago on Tuesday. Mr. Rowe
had been ill for several weeks
and had gone to St. Louis and
Chicago for special treatment of
internal pains.
Since telephone and telegraph
lines were out of order on account
of the snowfall, a message was
not able to get through until
about 6 o’clock this morning, when
Mrs. Robert Evans, Mr. Rowe’s
daughter, called from Washing
ton. No definite information as
to funeral plains had been receiv
ed at press time, but it was
thought that services would be
held at Lafayette, Ind., on Thurs
day or Friday.
Mr. Rowe is survived by his
wife, who was with him in Chica
go, and by four children, Mrs.
^J&bert Evans, of Washington, D.

two grandchildren, Grace Evans,
age five and Catherine Evans, age
Mr. Rowe was a native of
Evanston, 111., a graduate of
Princeton university class of 1902,
and was a member of the U'ni
versitv dub of Chicago. He came
to Tryon about five years ago af
ter retiring from business and be
came active in the affairs of the
Tryon Country club. He served
as secretary last year, and. was
recently elected vice-president for
this year. He was a trustee and
chairman of the building fund of
the Erskine Memorial Congrega
tional church here, and an hohor

several days ago which carried
a picture of the Lefty Flynns ar
riving at Norfolk, Va., to begin
their work of entertainment for
the sailors at the USO centers.
This morning Horace’s father
gives me a ne^y address for Hor
ace. He has been moved to U. 9. N.

Hester has been giving cigarettes
to the departing soldiers as they
left for induction in the army,
but there were getting to be so
many of them as the government
called more men into service that
the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs are
taking up contributions among
themselves to help out. Anyone
else desiring to help out on the
cigarette fund can join in, too.

that Miss Peggy Lincoln made
the honor roll of the Junior class
the past semester, and that Miss
Hope Schilletter has been elected
treasurer_ of her Freshman class
