Shifted For Election
The withdrawal of Fred Arledge
of Saluda from the Republican
n^jynation for Sheriff of Polk
vjppty made a number of changes
in Jie Republican line-up for the
fall election. W. D. Westbrook,
former sheriff, who was nominated
for county commissioner, has been
switched to the sheriff’s nomina
tion and he will oppose Democratic
nominee W. D. Hines. Hugh
Thompson of Saluda, who was
nominated for house of represen
tatives will take Mr. Westbrook’s
place to oppose Democratic nom
inee Grover Feagan for county
commissoiner. C. W. McGinnis,
who ran against Carroll Rogers
for the legislature last election,
will take Hugh Thompson’s nom
ination to opposo Democratic nom
inee W. H. McDonald for house
of representatives.

All passenger cars which carry
a passenger car license will regis
ter during these days and receive
a basic “A” book. Those who feel
they are entitled to additional
gasoline over the amount allowed
by the “A” book by reason of their
occupational requirements, may ap
ply through the local board for
such gasoline. These forms for
supplemental gasoline will be
available at the school sites where
registration is taking place. This
additional gasoline ration book
“B” or “C” will be issued only

County Budget Summary
Published for 1942-43
The Polk County Commissioners
have made up their 1942-1943
expense budget. A summary of
the budget prepared by County
Accountant W1. Y. Wilkins, Jr., is
published in today’s issue of the
Tryon Daily Bulletin. Detailed
copies of the complete budget are
on file at three places. One is at
the Register of Deeds office; an
other at the Bulletin office and one
in the office of the County Ac
countant W. Y. WilkinSj Jr. The
copy of the budget may be seen at
any one of the three places where
criticisms will be received and
passed on to the commissioners.
Mr. Wilkins states that he will
be glad to explain any questions
raised in order to help any tax
payer understand, the budget.
Looking over the budget briefly
we find that the estimated prop
erty valuation of the county is
$5,500,000.00. The county-wide
tax rate is $2.10. on each $100. It
takes almost $185,000 to run the
county. It takes about $30,000.00
to pay on the county-wide debt
service and over $57,000.00 for
county schools plus over $8,000.00
for Tryon school district. Other
details will be given later.
