POLK COUNTY SCHOOLS
OPEN ON MONDAY
All the schools, white and col
ored, of the Polk County Unit will
ii^en for the summer session on
l^mclay, July 20th, according to an
Announcement by County Superin
tendent Dr. W. E. Sawyer.
The principals of the various
schools will be the same except
for Stearns in Columbus where
R. A. Wilson, a former principal,
has been elected. Mrs. R. K.
Landis has been acting principal.
Mrs. Landis, who was formerly a
member of the Columbus school
district has also resigned from
that and she has been succeeded
by Jake Holbert of the Peniel
section.

Les Barnette says he has collected
37,000 pounds of scrap rubber
since the campaign started . . . .
The directors of the Tryoh Cham
ber of Commerce met this morning
and discussed the distribution of
the new pictorial folder just off the
press advertising Polk County as
well as Tryon. As the folders are
expensive the best distribution pos
sible is desired by the directors.
Anyone knowing of people inter
ested in coming to Tryon or Polk
County may apply to the Chamber
of Commerce for a folder.
Miss Lucile Cobb, treasurer and
society editor of The Morganton
News-Herald, died Monday of a
heart attack.
Adams-Millis defeated Tryon
Players 20 to 6 in softball Mon
day afternoon. The Bushwhack
ers and Soumerco will play this
evening at 6:30.
