600 Attend Farm Picnic
Tuesday In Polk County
Approximately 600 persons at
tended the annual Polk county
E^miers’ Federation picnic, held
l, '^y)lumbus on Tuesday.
A total of $452.60 in war bonds
and stamps was bought or pledged '
during the all-day event. The
bond and stamp booth is a regular
feature of the federation events
this summer. ,
James G. K. McClure, president
of the cooperative, presided and
stressed the importance of the
farmer in the war effort. Several
other persons spoke and a number
of musicians and entertainers ap
peared on the program.
Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, with
nine children, had the largest
family present. Mr. and Mrs. W.
-H. Pritchard were the oldest mar
ried couple on hand, and Mr. and
Mrs. Marion Chapman were the
youngest. 0. C. Harrison, with
29 .persons, hauled the largest

The Bushwhackers defeated Sou
merco 24 to 4 on Tuesday after
noon. Trvon Players and Adarns
Millis play this afternoon.
On Thursday the Bushwhackers
will play Adams-Millis at 6:80.
The Baptist Business Women’s
Circle will meet at the Wilkins
home Thursday evening at eight
o’clock with Miss Minnie Arledge
and Mrs. Beaufort Barnette as
joint ’hostesses. Mrs. Rucker
Durham will he program leader.
The topic for discussion, “What
soever Things are of Virtue.”

The next meeting of the Execu
tive Board of the Piedmont Boy
Scout Council representing eleven
counties, will be held at the Boy
Scout camp* on Lake Lanier on
Sunday morning, according to an
announcement by Scout Execu
tive R. M. Schiele.
Special Sale of War Savings
Bonds and Stamps on July 17
The Treasury Department will
conduct a campaign for the sale
of War Savings Bonds and
Stamps on July 17, in cooperation
with the Retailers of America.
It is understood that retail mer
chants will arrange to provide
for the sale of War Savings Bonds
and Stamps until 9 p. m., on
July 17th.
Postmasters are instructed to
cooperate with local committees
where such campaigns are in prog
ress, and where the merchants keep
open for the sale of War Savings
Bonds and Stamps, postmasters
are authorized to provide window
service up to tht hour for the sale
of War Savings Bonds and Stamps.
A Knight At Rotary
The Tryon Rotary club program
on Friday at 1 p. m., at Sunny
dale will be in charge of William
E. Knight. He will be assisted by
Rotarian R. M. Schiele of Gas
tonia.
