Plant Wild Cherry for Birds
Many complaints have come in
from gardeners who have fruit
crops. The birds seem to forget
, all about garden pests when
■raspberries and cherries begin to
'-o'ipen.
There are several things to do.
Pieces of white <jloth hanging in
the tree are effective for some
birds; small mirrors or bright
pieces of tin will help. But an
other way is to feed other fruits.
Catbirds and robins are the
greatest fruit eaters; both are
very fond of seedless raisins, which
are more satisfying than the fresh
fruit. Try them. Best of all,
plant some wild cherry around
your garden. Birds love them; and
the tree is a graceful one and
quick growing. The wood is valu
able for timber. Who knows but
the fruit would improve the birds
songs? We have all taken wild
cherry lozenges for throat troubl

Rate On Land Bank Loans
President Roosevelt "has signed
a bill extending for two years the
reduced interest rates on Federal
Land Bank and Land Bank Com
missioner loans, G. C. Thompson,
president of the Columbus Nation
al Farm Loan association, an
nounced this week. Mr. Thomp
son stated that this would mean
a considerable saving in interest
charges to borrowers in Polk
County.
The Columbus association is a
member of a group of four as
sociations maintaining a joint
office at Rutherfordton, serving
