Somewhere In Africa.
Nov. 23, 1942.
Dear Mr. Vining:
A few words in appreciation for
your pagt favors, and to wish you
•and the rest of my Tryon and
Polk County friends, a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New
Year of Peace and Freedom. I
wish it were so I could send you
all a Christmas greeting. The
good old American way though
that is impossible with me, I take
this way of reminding you all
back there that we are thinking
of you at this time and fully ap
preciate what you all are doing
for the war effort.
I am well and in best of health.
Hope this finds all of you the
same. To all of you who have
written me and have not received
an answer, I am very grateful
and will answer as soon as pos
sible and may peace and good will
abide for you all in the near
future. I remain an old friend,
Corp. Tech. Kelly A. Pittman,
34031985.
Corporal Pittman’s letter was
written in Africa on Nov. 23,
mailed at the Army Post Office,
Nov. 24th, and arrived in Tryon
Dec. 3. It probably came on the
same ship with the 77 wounded
Americans wfro are now in Moore
hospital" at Swannanoa. .All 77
were awarded the Purple Heart
decoration Thursday afternoon by
order of the Secretary of War,
and Col. Frank W. Wilson, com
manding’ officer at the hospital
pinned the medals on them. The
medals were flown from Washing
ton by airplane. They are heart
shaped with a picture of George
Washington on them.
