Father of Charles Cox
- Murdered At Switzer, S. C
Walter Cox, 60, father of
Charles Cox of Tryon, was found
early Wednesday _ morning
Fis combination filling station
and store at Switzer, S. C. His
head had been crushed with a
blunt instrument, and officers be
lieve robbery was the motive as
small change was scattered and
his money box missing. The mur
der is thought to have taken place
about dawn soon after Mr. Cox
had opened his store. He was
filling a sack of apples from a
basket when struck. Officers are
searching for the assailant. The
tragedy was discovered by a
bread truck driver shortly after
7 a. m.
Funeral services will be held
this afternoon (Thursday) at 3
o’clock at the home which is about
one-foUrth mile from the store.
Besides his son, Charles Cox, of
Tryon, the deceased is survived

Morgan Chapel Cemetery
And Grounds Cleaning
All members of Morgan’s Chapel
I church and all those that have
friends and relatives buried there
are requested to meet at the
church early Saturday morning,
December 26th, for the purpose of
cleaning off the cemetery and
church grounds. If you cannot
come, send some one. If you can
not do this please send contribu
tion to pay for work. Everybody
bring tools.
CATHOLIC SERVICES
Midnight Mass, tonight, Christ
mas Eve, will be celebrated at St.
John’s Catholic church. Mass will
be held twice on Christmas day,
at 8:30 a. m., and the second
immediately following the first.
Sunday morning service will be
held as usual at 8 a. m., Father
Florian, celebrant.
TO BURN PILE OF SILK
Major B. Sharp, Polk County
Salvage chairman, has shipped 115
pounds of silk scrap and silk,
nylon and rayon stockings to be
used in firing guns. Major Sharp
said this material will be needed
as long as they use gunpowder
in this war. 16 pounds of silk
just received from Saluda will go
in the next shipment. To help
the men to fire the guns now is
a good time to give your old silk.
Leave with any dry goods store
in Tryon or send to Miss Helen
Stearns, Tryon, N. C., or any
other collecting agent in the
county.
