Pinckney Mills Killed In Action In Italy Mrs. Pinckney Mills of Try on has been notified by the War De «tment that her husband, Pfc. ckney' Mills, was killed in ac i in/Italy on June 25th. Pvt. Mills is survived by his widow, the former Miss Ophelia Reed, and one son, about a year old, and ,his parents, who live at Mill Spring. Before entering the ser vice Mr. Mills was employed at the Southern Mercerizing Co., and was a leader in the Second Baptist church. Clyde Pittman Wounded Mrs. Clyde W. Pittman has re ceived a letter from her husband, Pvt. Pittman, stating that he had been wounded in the left leg. He wrote: ‘I am lying on my back, and will be here for two months. I got shot in the left leg on July 2nd. My leg is in a sling, but they « I am getting along fine, so ’t worry.” Mrs. Pittman re ed a letter several days ago from an army nurse who said that Private Pittman fcad been vfoUnd ed and would write her soon. He enclosed some French money which indicated that he was in France when wounded. GRAND OLE OPRY HERE TOMORROW The famous Grand Ole Opry of Nashville, Tenn., fame, including' Curley Williams and his Georgia Peach Pickers, Sanford Williams, Joseph Williams, Joe Pope, Boots Harris and Jimmy Selph, will be at Tryon Theatre, Friday after noon and night. t County Schools Opening Postponed Indefinitely Supt. N. A. Melon states on account of the infantile paralysis in nearby districts, the opening of Polk County rural schools has been postponed indefinitely. MILLS PLACE SOLD Joe Mills of Nashville, Tenn., formerly of Tryon, has sold his 60-acre tract of land in the ther mal belt to F..P. Bacon. The land adjoins property of Dudley C. Smith, Harry Marsh and W. C. Bates. Sale made through G. Harrison Bridgeman. Captain Phipps At Rotary Capt. Thomas W. Phipps of Fort Benning, Ga., who is visiting his mother, Mrs. M. B. Flynn and Mr. Flynn, will be the guest speak er at the Tryon Rotary club Fri day at 1 p. m., at Oak Hall. Cap tain Phipps took his basic train ing at Camp Wheeler, Ga., from which place he went to the Officers Candidate School, where he was ^advanced in a special line of work. In private life he is a short story writer and motion picture author. Capt. Phipps will be the guest of R. E. Brantley, who has charge of the program. MARRIED Announcements have been re ceived in Tryon of the marriage of Miss Berthenia Pue Crocker to Lieut. Francis Daly Smith, on June 10th, at the Post Chapel, Camp Polk, La. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Henry Trew Crocker of Bel Air Md., and spent last winter in Tryon with her aunt, Mrs. E. Pue-Williams.
