SALUDA NEWS Ernest L. Patterson died at his home at 10:30 Thursday July 13, in his 74th year. He had been ill for many months, but the end came when he developed pneu monia. Funeral service was held at the Methodist church and in terment in Hendersonville. He is survived by his wife, Maggie For rest, one son, six daughters and nine grandchildren. He served the Southern Railway for 53 years, drove the “helper” for 39 years and belonged to the Masons for years. It can be truly said of Mr. Patterson—“well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” The annual Seminar which is held at Dr. Smith’s Baby hospital opened on the fifteenth. There are 93 doctors registered; from all over the U. S. and more are ex pected this week. Rev. William Elliott, Jr., of Tex as will preach at the Presbyter ian church on Sunday, July 23rd, at 11 a. m. It is hoped there will be a large congregation. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Holmes of Greensboro, spent the week-end with Mr. Holmes’ aunt, Miss Ada B. Schenck. H. D. McCallister spent a few days with his mother. He is sta tioned at camp in Kansas. Miss Eunice Sonner of Balti more, Md., and her brother, Fair child, are visiting their mother, Mrs. Q. C. Sonner. Fairchild has a position in Memphis, Tenn. They will only be here for a few days. Mis| Harriett Wilson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson of Charleston, came over from Kanu ga for the week-end. Rev. and Mrs. H. Hobart of Augusta, Ga., are spending awhile with Mrs. Robert Wilson. A lovely party was given Mrs. Strieker Coles by her Fairview friends. After supper Mrs. Coles was given a prominent seat on the Porch. Mrs. John Young, bearing a lovely birthday cake, Mrs. Izarda-a tray of wine glass es and wine, and Mrs. Lock with a tray of lovely gifts from many friends. Happy birthday was sung by the guests. After serv ing the cake and wine the gifts were opened, and thoroughly ap preciated by Mrs. Coles, who was celebrating her 86th birthday. The latest guests at Fairview are Mr. and Mrs. Stevens of Savannah, Ga., and Robert Cope land of Washington, D. C., grand nephew of Mrs. Locke. The colored Baptists held their annual convention at St. John’s Baptist church in Asheville on Friday. Mary Hampton and Lucy Meadows were the delegates from Saluda. A daughter was born Monday afternoon at St. Luke’s hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Hix McAbee. Lt. Jay W. Smith has been pro^ moted to first lieutenant, award^B the air medal and oak leaf clinB ter.
