C„ WED., SEPT. 20, 1944 CURB REPORTER 'Weather Tuesday: High 82, low 66, rain .25 . . . George A. Cathey gave a talk at Kiwanis J Tuesday and told how the rehabil itation committee in cooperation with the Red Cross keeps up with service men and their families from time of induction to discharge and helps service men get located again in their employment in pri vate life . . Only a few Kiwanians have failed to contribute to the United-War Fund. The employees of Adams-Millis- Corp. have con tributed $289.75 to this FUND. An interesting fact: the men who have been in service and have been discharged for physical reasons and are now' employed, are the lar gest donors. Evidently they know JB|value of the USO and other Hfits derived from the United War Fund, Anyone interested in giving may send in check to the treasurer, Julian B. Hester at the Tryon Bank & Trust Co. . A. L. Covington says he is glad he is not in Sweden where they have to use 90 or more ration books in order to get food and clothing. . . . The war news continues to look good with the Allies gaining on German soil in the west*-and the Russians moving forward in the east. In Italy the Americans and British are slowly pushing the Germans back . . American ma rines driye forward on Pacific islands, and sink 29 Jap ships. _Continued on Book Page WITH OUR ARMED FORGES - Lieut. George D. Cooksey, Jr. has arrived in Tryon for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Cooksey, and his wife who came to Tryon from . California to meet him. Lieut. Cooksey was reported missing in action while flying over enemy territory one week after D-Day. For about two months no news was received from him until a cable came saying that he was all right. Lieut. Robert S. DuRant has gone to his new base at Courtland, Ala. after spending his first leave with his parents, Mr. and Mfrs. R. S. DuRant. Mrs. Margaret Pace Pittman has gone to Staunton, Va. to vis it her husband, Pvt. Clyde Pittman who is in Woodrow Wilson Gen eral hospitai for treatment of in juries received in the invasion of Prance. He arrived last week in Charleston, S. C. and was trans ferred to the Virginia, hospital. He has a broken leg. Joe Wall, U. S. Navy is home on leave after many months service inti the Pacific.
