DuRant New President Of Chamber of Commerce R. S. DuRant, general manager of the Avant Electric Co., was elected president of the Tryon Chamber of Commerce at a meet ing of the Board of Directors Monday night. R. E. Brantley, manager of Tryon Theatre, was elected vice-president and Seth M. Vining, secretary-treasurer. Mr. DuRant who was vice president last year, succeeds Tom Costa. He is a former president of the Rotary club and has been interested in the improvement of the community in general. Mr. Brantley is also a fonher presi dent of the Rotary club, the Mer chants Association, the softball league, and is a member of the Tryon-Saluda school board. There are nine directors of the Chamber of Commerce. Each year three members’ terms expire. This , year the terms of L. F. Buchanan, Ernest Kerhulas and W. M. Spivey expired. The object of the stag gered terms is to bring in new men from time to time. Mr. Spivey as town manager, is a director of the chamber of commerce by vir tue of his office and was reelected. The two new members are Fred S. Owen of 0*wen’s Pharmacy and Mr. Brantley. THE BEAN BRIGADE The following boys and girls from Columbus school are mem bers of the bean brigade which attracted state-wide attention last week when they saved a bean crop: Bob Gibson, Grace Burnett, Frank Burgess, Charles Jordon, Kay Wilson, Margaret Hines, Luke McIntyre, Jean Ormond, Bobbie Ramsey, Sara Max Or mond, Larry Constance, Pemumia Atkins, Alvin West, Christine Green, John Clarke, Fannie Fos ter, Alvin Constance, Rachel Clarke, Larry Wilson. Joe Wijkerson, proprietor of Tryon Cafe, fell Monday morning on a slippery floor that had just been mopped, and broke his knee bap. Hie is in ;a Spartanbtfrg hospital for treatment. STORES TO CLOSE At a meeting of the Merchants with the Chamber of Commerce Monday night, the stores voted to close every Wednesday afternoon through the winter season except during weeks when there is a holi day and the two weeks prior to Christmas. POLICE CAPTURE SUGAR Tryon Policemen, Chief A. C. Saltz and Louis Lindsey captured a '39 Oldsmobile and 900 pounds of black market sugar Monday night on a Gillette Woods road headed for South Carolina. The sugar has been turned over to the OP A.
