Frank Patton, Republi can candidate for governor ad dressed meetings in Columbus and Tryon Saturday. Hon. A. L. Bul winkle, Democratic candidate for Congress will speak at Saluda Thursday night . . . Scout Court of Honor will be held tonight at 8 at Tryon School .... Tryon football team goes to Greer to night to play a game rained- out last week. . . Big Naval battle on around Philippines. U. GFDDINGS AT KIWANIS Marvin Geddings, agricultural engineer of the Duke Power Co., will be the guest speaker at the Tryon Kiwanis club Tuesday at 1 p. m., at Oak Hall hotel. WITH OUR ARMED FORGES Francis Chapman Home S | Sgt. Francis Chapman arrived home Friday from England where he has been for the past 13 months in the army air force as a togglier. He will be here until Nov. 6 when he reports to the Miami Redis tribution Center. Sgt. Chapman was wounded in the left shoulder while flying over enemy territory;^, and one time his plane was so high in the air that he ‘had to be treated for frozen feet. For his achievements he has received the Presidential citation, the Disting uished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. Sgt. Chapman entered the army air corps soon after gradu ation from Tryon High School. While here he was a member of the football and basketball teams and did interior decorating. * * * * Pfc. Thurston Arledge, U. S. Marines, Cherry Point, N. C., spent the week-end at home. Pvt. and Mrs. N. R. Rector, Jr., are here from Texts for a visit; PvT Rector on furlough from Lubbock Field, and Mrs. Rector from Wichita Falls, where she has a government position. Pvt. Ezelle Foster was slight ly wounded in Italy, according to a message received by his wife on Saturday. _Continued on Back Page__
