AT LANIER CLUB The regular meeting of the Lanier club on Jan. 4th was one of great interest al*L variety, pre senting four speakers who rep different phases of our war ies. Ts Miss Betty Doubleday of Tryon told her experiences in Afri ca when she was a representative of the American Red Cross, one could be sure that not only did she find her work rewarding but also that soldiers in hospitals ap preciated the Red Cross through Miss Doubleday’s services and personality. Chaplain Broadus Wall of the U. S. Naval Convalescent hospital at Kenilworth, Asheville, to’d of his work in preparing men to re turn to civilian life, of the men’s appreciation of the Christmas gifts sent from Western North Caro lina, of the recreation and activi ties provided for the men in hos pitals. Lieut. Marvin Golden of Moore General hospital called himself assistant in reconditioning—men tal and physical—giving a picture of the care taken for these two sides of the needs of men in the hospital. Major V. Johnson of Camp Croft spoke of the efforts of his office in helping men to settle law, busi ness, allowance, allotment and in surance problems. Through his de partment bond purchases for last November and December amounted to ?4 ,fo of Camp Croft’s military payroll. , The hostesses for the social hour that followed the program were Mrs. B. B. Turck and Mrs. Daniel P. Mitchell.—Goitributed. Mrs. Sam Wa’ker was called to Detroit Monday by the illness oi her little nephew, Barry White, the little boy had a piece of a nutshell loaded in his windpipe. When Mrs. Walker’s last message came, the doctors had succeeded in removing part of the shell, but had Barry in an oxygen tent, and would not try for the remaining part until the next day.
