Horace Thompson In Battles of France Sixth Army Group, France.— Few tank destroyer battalions can match the record pf the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion, which aided the American breakthrough from Normandy to the Seine River and is now pounding the last ap proaches to the Reich. Since its arrival in France on D-plus-21, this veteran unit of which Cpl. Horace Thompson of Saluda is a member, has eliminated from the German rosters: 6 0 sol diers, 26 general purpose vehicles, 26 Mark IV tanks, 11 Mark V tanks, two Mark VI tanks, 10 self fjspelled guns, eight pillboxes, P anti-tank guns, and three achine guns. In a single operation one 813th T. D. company knocked out 13 Mark IV tanks and two Mark VI tanks, two half-tracks, two large trucks and one" mortar, probably silenced one self-propelled gun, and killed 80 Germans. * * # * Mr. and Mrs.C. H. Wilson have received word that their son, -Pf c. Calvin C. Wilson, is missing in action in Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bennett have received word that their son, Pvt. Horace Bennett, is missing in action in Germany; Mrs. Albert Jackson received .1_Continued on Back Page McDonald Introduces Bill To Change Commissioners Terms Representative W. H. McDonald of Polk County has introduced the following bill which changes the County Commissioners term of office from six years to two or four depending on candidates’ popular vote: “A Bill to Be Entitled an Act to Re-Establish the Terms of Office ox the Members of the Board of Commissioners of Polk County— “The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact: “Section 1. At the next biennial election to be held in the County of Polk there shall be elected three Commissioners for said Coun ty, the one receiving the highest vote to serve for a term of -our years, the other two for a term of two years, and until their suc cessors are duly elected and quali fied. "Section a. sucn terms oi omce for County Commissioners for the County o2 Folk shall apply to each subsequent biennial election held in said County, two Commission ers to be elected, the one receiv ing the greater vote to serve for a term of four years. “Section 3. The terms of office of all Commissioners of Polk County heretofore elected shall terminate upon the election and qualification of the three Commis sioners provided for in Section i one of this Act. | Section 4.
