ty last Friday. So we are saying

Mrs. Calhoun is for the fourth
year giving her garden, home and
unfailing interest. Many of you
will be making delicious food and
paying 35c to eat it. And all of
you are warming the hearts of
Polk County service men and wo
men all over the world by your
devotion.
Last year there were 250 pres
ent, and we cleared $170. This
amount has helped in the follow
ing ways: This past year 9 let
ters have been sent to our whole
group, and that is now nearly a
thousand men and women, it
means that our most simple letter
costs over $33. 'The Easter one,
most recently sent, was about $45,
the Christmas letter slightly more.
In addition to the group letters
there are each week among the
many letters received, a few need
ing answers—thanks for the pho
tographs and gifts or replies to
their requests for addresses.* And
there is frequent communication
with their families in regard to
changes of address.
Meanwhile the need for our par
ting g /if ts as they leave for in
duction still continues. Three Ne
gro boys go next month, 20 white
boys on the 27th. Each of these will
go away wearing around his neck
the cross and cord just given to
him, and carrying; in his pocket, a
personally inscribed small bo^Af
prayers, and a letter empha^wig
the devotion and Godspeed of his
community.
