Andrews announces that the Tryon office has on sale the new five cents postage stamps commemorating the United Na tions conference at San Francis co. The stamps are blue in color and about the size of the Special Delivery stamps. They have the words in paranthesis (Toward United Nations April 25th, 1945) a wreath, and the words Franklin D. Roosevelt. U. S. Postage, 5 cents. Postmaster Andrews says he received 500 Wednesday at the request of many patrons. Stamp collectors are expected to be among the larger purchasers of these special stamps .... George W. Whitehead, secretary-elect oi the Tr»/on Rotary club, will be in jfcarge of the Rotary program on Cvi day at 1 p. m., at Oak Hall Sfotel .... 'The Spartanburg Herald states that Register of Deeds C. W. Ballenger, has cut the charge of filing veterans dis charge papers from $1 to 50c. Some counties don’t charge any thing, but in those counties the register of deeds gets a salary. In Polk he does not, and has to run his office on a fee system, says Mr. Ballenger. . . . 2,000 gas coupons lost from Spartanburg Rationing office. . . . James F. Gantt has an nounced the following commence ment program for Mill Spring school: The graduation sermon will be delivered on Sunday evening, May 20th, at 8:30, by the Rev. Mr. N. A. Melton. On Thursday evening, May 24th, at 8:30, Mrs. J. W. Gantt will present her piano students in a public recital. On Friday evening, May 25th, at 8:30 regular graduation exer cises. Commencement address to be delivered at that time by Hon. W. H. McDonald. All of the above programs will be presented from the high school auditorium. ERSKINE AT KIWANIS Carroll P. Rogers had charge of the Kiwanis club program -on Tuesday at 1 p. m. at Oak Hall hotel. The guest speaker was Ralph C. Erskine. the author and historian, who outlined the dang ers of allowing governments to do too much for the people; giving them jobs, and regulating their lives, which results in taking away the stimulus of private in itiative, and eventually places the people under the complete control of governmental agencies. ARTHUR SAIN Arthur Sain, about 55 years old, prominent Silver Creek farm er, dropped dead early this, morn ing, presumably'from a heart at tack. He is survived by his widow and several children. Funeral ar rangements will be announced later.
