President Truman suggests that the Speaker of the House be named to succeed to the Presidency in the event of the death of the President and Vice President; then the president pro tempore of the senate, before con tinuing the line of succession to the secretary of state and other cabinet members in order of their creation. Suggestion approved by Republicans and Democrats. Five billion dollars in securities stolen by Germans found by American soldiers. Progress continues against the Japs in the Pacific .... Parents may check this advantage ... . The Newman Stable Fund continue to grow. Ad ditional contributions have been entered from S|Sgt. Marshall West, Mrs. Martha Boone, Elisha Camp, Dr. John Z. Preston, Tryon Shoe Hospital, Charles D. Brown. Nearly $900 has been raised so far. . Checks may be made out to Newman Stable Fund and sent to Tryon Bank & Trust Co., or to the Bulletin office. Gov. Requests Continuance Of Civilian Defense Office Governor R. Gregg Cherry has written Polk County Chairman Charles J. Lynch thanking him and all the members of his committee for the splendid work done by the Civilian Defense Council. The Governor writes, “Also, I take this opportunity to request you to remain in your present capacity in Civilian Defense, with your organization of volunteers re maining intact, to handle any ser vices which your group may rend er in prosecuting the war against Japan to the utmost. Please do not consider your.. OCD responsibilities ended until Japan is defeated and you have been notified that your appointment has terminated. Your State Director R. L. McMillan, graciously has agreed to continue on a voluntary basis in his present capacity for such further service and information as may be needed from and on the State level after June 30th which also is the term ination of the National Office of Civilian Defense.” Chairman Lynch was originally appointed by Governor Broughton. MRS. HILL AT KIWANIS Mrs. Walter C. Hill of the Polk County Council of the Red Cross Committee which is furnishing re creation facilities for the soldiers and sailors in the camps and hos pitals of Western North Carolina, gave an interesting talk at Ki wanis on Tuesday when she told of the appreciation of the men in the hospitals and rest centers, and of the joy donors have had in making it possible for returned service men to recuperate from their -Continued on Back Page_
