R., of Columbus, N. C., who helped build merchant ships at the North Carolina Shipbuilding Co., before he joined the navy, is in charge of a group of anti-aircraft guns on this ship. Walker, whose wife lives in Columbus, was graduated from Stearns High School in 1934. After entering the navy in Feb ruary, 1943, Walker was sent to Bainbridge, Md., for recruit train ing, studied gunnery at Norfolk, Virginia, and was moved to Whid bey Island, off the West Coast, for seven months. Walker was assign ed to this battleship in February, 1944. This ship helped cover the landing on Leyte, played a notable part in the Battle of Surigao Straits last October and aided in the Mindoro landing. She bomb arded the Lingayen Gulf coast of Luzon and Iwo Jima during those invasions. In all the island opera tions the ship weathered heavy Japanese air attacks.
