It is too bad there are no apartments available for the many people who want to come to Tryon in the summer. One family had to divide up, part went to a hotel and part to an apartment. . . . About everything will be closed in Tryon tomorrow, Wednesday, July 4th, including the Bank, Post Office and all the stores, as has been the custom for years. Consumers are cautioned to shop today. The Ration Board will also be closed July 4th . . . . tJohn Washburn at Vinal n, Maine, writes that it has so cool there that people are still planting their spring gardens and young robins are just learn ing to fly.The Asheville Citizen reports a number of par ties for Miss Judy Ambler, bride elect of Capt. Alexander Russell. Miss Ambler has been a frequent guest in Tryon. ... A mass of cold air is moving in this direc tion reports Asheville Weather Bureau, and it will be cooler for several days. Hendersonville air port reports 60 mile wind and hailstones nearly half an inch in diameter.A medium bomber failed to land properly at Hendersonville airport Monday and crashed killing one of five members of the crew .... Bomb _..Continued on Back Page.._ STABLE FUND $2,200 Contributions for the Newman Stable Fund have reached over $2,200, according to Treasurer Julian B. Hester, at the Tryon Bank & Trust Co. Another call for volunteers to help mix concrete to make the foundation will be issued soon. The new roofing has been secured. Recent contributions have been made by Lieut. Philo Higley, U. S., N. R. (author of “Remember the Day”), Washington, D. C.; Mr. and Mrs. Joel Stockard, Tom Rose, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Allen from Pemaquid Harbor, Me.; Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Law, Mrs. Mary Stearns Graham, Ernest S. Bal lard of Chicago; John Stuart Dud ley of New York City; Clark A. Lawrence of Chicago; Wm. C. Conant of Weston, Mass.; Dr. C. W. McCall, Mrs. Fred H. Rollins. Levi Henderson, Frank B. Ed wards, Donell Flynn, and Officer Candidate Donald W. Wing, F. A.. OSC 152, Fort Sill, Okla., who writes: “I wish I could be there to swing a hammer, too!” One donor wrote: “that was a cute letter from Iredell Jones. I liked Pepper, too, but Caesar was my favorite.” Pfc. J. C. Jackson Honored Pfc. James Chapman Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jack son, Jr., of Tryon, was one of 60 soldiers of the 78th Division to receive the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for “exemplary conduct in action against the enemy,” accord ing to an announcement by Major General Edwin P. Parker, Jr., com manding general of the Lightning Division. One other North Caro linian so honored was Cpl. Em mett W. Cauble, Jr., of Biltmore.
