of rain, but we are lucky com
pared to neighboring sections. Be
ing right at the foot of the moun

or large and the water runs off
quickly. Farther south and east,
even as close as Forest City, high
way traffic was suspended in plac
es, and No. 74 from Charlotte to
Wilmington was blocked. The pas
senger train No. 27 from Char
leston to Tryon due here a little
after 4 p. m., didn’t arrive until
this morning between 5 and 6
o’clock. It was held up by high
water south of Columbia, S. C. . . .

FARMERS FEDERATION
TO REBUILD PLANT HERE

and General Manager Guy Sales
of Asheville were in Tryon Mon
day making plans for the rebuild
ing of the Polk County Warehouse
of the Farmers Federation which
was destroyed by fire early Sun
day morning. The freezer locker
plant which was nearing comple
tion was also destroyed.
President McClure was high in
his praise of the Tryon Volunteer
Fire Department, which responded
so wonderfully at 5 o’clock in the
morning. The cause of the fire is
still undetermined. The damage to
stock, building and freezer locker
equipment and otherwise has been
estimated at from $35,000 to
$50,000. Most of the loss is cov
ered by insurance.
General Manager Sales stated
Monday that contractors expected
to have the new building erected
within 60 to 90 days.
A meeting of the Polk County
Committee of the Federation will
be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock
to discuss plans for the future.
The work of rebuilding the freezer
locker plant will also go forward
just as soon as materials and
equipment can be brought in.
