we read the news of the death of
E. T. H. Shaffer, of Walterboro,
S. C., a noted author, who proudly
claimed the honor of being the
dean of Saluda’s summer resi
dents. He had been making Sa
luda his summer home for about
half a century. He always includ
ed visits to his Tryon friends each
year. He was a charming: man
who saw beauty in so many
«ings, and told the world about
| through books and national
agazines . . Walter Brown, vice
president <?f the Spartanburg Ra
dio WSPA, has resigned as as
sistant to Secretary of State J.
Byrnes, and will return to private
business. He is a summer resi
dent of Tryon . . Another Wash
ington news item, states that
Col. Arthur Smith of Tryon de
sires the names of all Polk Coun
ty service men now in hospitals,
no matter where. He says the
Masonic lodges will send a small
Christmas gift to each of them.

E. T. H. Shaffer Passes

Shaffer, South Carolina author
who contributed to many maga
zines, died at his home, Rose Hill,
in Walterboro this morning. His
summer residence was in Saluda,
N. C. Funeral arrangements are
incomplete.
Mr. Chaffer was author of “Ca
rolina Gardens,” book review ed
itor of the South Carolina Maga
zine, and contributor to The At
lantic Monthly, Forum, the Yale
Review, National Geographic,
Spur, Fortune, Nature Magazine,
Textiles, South Atlantic Quarter
ly and other magazines.
He was the son of A. Casper
Shaffer and Mrs. Amelia Jane
Terry Shaffer of Walterboro, orig
inally from New Jersey. He was
born in Walterboro, attended lo
cal schools and graduated from
the College of Charleston.
Mr. S'halter was a trustee of
the College of Charleston, an el
der in Bethel Presbyterian church
in Walterboro, for many years
superintendent of the church’s
Sunday school; member of the
Lions club, the Masons, and a di
rector of the South Carolina
Power company.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs.
Clara Speights Barr Shaffer, for
merly of Greenville; a son, Ed
ward T. H., Jr., captain with Pan
American Airways in Guatemala;
a daughter, Mrs. J. Blanding Hol
man of Batesburg, and five grand
children. A foster sister, Mrs. S.
E. Boney, lives in Syracuse, N". Y.
