Dear Mr. Vining:
I just read in The Bulletin that
the first wagon went from North
Carolina to Tennessee in 1795. I
made the trip from Bristol, Tenn.,
that same way but was too young
to remember much about that one.
A few years later we went back
for a visit by wagon and returned
to Tryon. I won’t forget that trip
as long as I live, for it meant a
lot to me. We picked up my first
pony then.
I remember Tryon had the nicest
watering place on the entire trip'.
At most other places we drank up
stream from the horses and tried
to drink before the dog got in
first. In Tryon there was a place
for the horses and the dog; also
a spigot for us.
I wonder where those few good
tax paying dogs get a clean drink.
They had a swell place then, and
I don’t think they paid taxes.
I am wondering if there would
ibe a chance to learn more about
that first trip by wagon, or if you
only have the date.
Things have changed so much
since I first remember, I wonder
what it was like in 1795.
I believe we were the last ones
to make a trip like that by wagon.
Cars and roads have been improv
ing ever since. People pay taxes
to bujjd them.
The poor old dog pays, but he
doesn’t get much.
I enjoy The Bulletin verv much.
