Ford Motor Company plants shut down. . . O. Max Gardner of Shelby who came to Columbus, N. C., about 18 years ago to make a speech "soliciting votes to be gov ernor of North Carolina, got elect ed with the help of Polk County’s votes and became one of North Carolina’s great governors. He served during the beginning of the depression and started the state onyJBtorogram to look out for its ov^Pjts needy, and its resources; to |row more, produce more, and give more jobs to more people. Even the Republicans said he made a good governor. He became recog nized as an outstanding business leader. He has been serving as undersecretary of the treasury. Now. he is the new American Ambassador to Great Britain where he will “talk with kings”— if that means anything. Anyway, America will be well-represented by an intelligent man who knows the needs of the everyday fellow as well as the scheming of politi cal and financial manipulators. . . . —Continued on . Back Page_ SAM FEAGAN DIES FOLLOWING ILLNESS Sam J. Feagan of Green’s Creek, prominent leader in county affairs, and active in the Democratic par ty, died Tuesday night at 11:45 in Mjary Black Hospital in Spartan burg following a cerebral hemor rhage. He had been in ill health for several years. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Green’s Creek Baptist Church and burial will be in the family plot at Sandy Plains. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Feagan, one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Feagan Roper, four sisters and seven brothers. GREEN RITES TODAY Funeral services for Ira Green, hit-and-run victim of Thursday night, will be held this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at the Pacolet Bap tist Church, with Rev. Malcolm J. Ross, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Bryant. Interment in Tryon cemetery. Pallbearers: Paul Justice, Ben Cochran, Clarence Cochran, Lee Cochran, Silvanus Dedman, and Leighton Green. Flowerbearers: Velma Conner, Jeanette Dedman, Betty Thompson, Betty Chapman, Alice Marie Wil son, Faye Thomppson. The body will be at the home at Lynn until the hour of service. Six meetings to encourage the es tablishment of rural industries and services through the State have been held by Governor R. Gregg Cherry’s special committee. Five other meetings are planned.
