REMINISCENCES (By Miss Helen A, Carver) The large house had many looms which in winter were filled with paying guests. Incidentally, I note that each room had a trash-burner stove. Each morning, an attend ant started a fire and put on a receptacle for hot water. A half century ago, that was considered the acme of comfort in Tryon! Mrs. Ferris did not limit her guests to her own preferences in diet, giving them, instead, a gener ous table Although she was much respected by them, they were rather gratified when some minor ill kept her in her room and “Charles”, without comment, helped himself to some of the normal food he was serving the others. If I could sketch from memory, I should like to have the Ferrises roll off my page in their own car nage, a closed, coupe-like vehicle unlike anything else on wheels ever seen in Tryon. The driver sat very high in front, with the owners, out to take the fresh air in winter, snugly tucked in back of him with all the robes and shawls an Arctic Winter might have demanded. At one window appeared the face of Mr. Ferris, with his gray side burns and at the other, the sur prisingly-modern, fine face of Mrs. Ferris framed by mid-Victorian curls.
