Kiwanians Hear Speakers From Tryon High School Elbert Arledge had charge of the Tryon Kiwanis Club program Tuesday at 1 p. m. at Oak Hall hotel and presented (the prize winning speakers of Tryon High School, Miss Lavinia Greene and Garland Goodwin, who delivered speeches they had written on World Peace. Both young people were so good that they received a rising vote of thanks from the members who voted by ballot on which was the better. The vote will not be counted until after the Rotary hears them and votes. Slome members expressed ttihear belief in a tie. Dr. John Z. Preston reported the donation of a battery radio set for one of the bedridden pa tients needing one. Chas. J. Lynch reported $20 in donations to go toward the purchase of another. Between $40 and $50 more is needed. Ralph Farthing, chairman of the Underprivileged Committee re ported on the needs of a family where children are suffering for lack of support from a father who will not work to provide for them. Special investigation was authorized. Charles MacDonald reported progress on the organization and equipment of the Tryon Sea Scout Troop, which still needs some' old Navy uniforms, hats, wheel, etc. Col. James Safford, Scout Com missioner, asked for names of peo ple who own boats nearby and who would permit local members of the Sea Scouts to take a brief trip on them during the summer in order to get actual sea experience. Carroll P. Rogers inducted Ralph Lawrence into membership in the club. He also eulogized Kiwanian 0. Max Gardner, a charter mem ber of the Shelby Kiwanis Club who emphasized all the fine quali ties of a Kiwanian as a builder of character, home, school, church, government, and who in private and public life stood for the high est ideals of Kiwanis. Guests at the meeting included Kiwanians Virgil St. Cloud of the Raleigh Club; Dr. J. T. Ramseur of the Forest City Club; N. F. Jones of the Hendersonville Club; Boy Scout Commissioner J., 0.
