Monday, February 17th, was Radio Station WSPA’s 17th birthday and a big celebration was held over the event with Gover nor Thurmond as chief speaker. He said of Mr. Byrnes, “He has served this state and this country in more important ways than any other man in history, and we owe him a great debt.” He also con gratulated WSPA on its achieve ments, and the opening of its Frequency Modulation Station . . . This is Art Day in Tryon and beginning at 2 p.m., until 9 p. m., the Parish House will be the scene the largest collection of art J er shown here and will give newcomers and old Tryonites an opportunity to learn something new to appreciate in their neigh bors .... Polk County has 1,302 veterans of World Wars I and II. A membership campaign for the American Legion is under way. The county quota is 325. Mlrs. Robert McFarland of Columbus is district vice-chairman .... The Cub Scours of Columbus need some old coping saw frames. They can get the blades but don’t have the frames. SCOUT COURT RESULTS The Boy Scout meetings held in the school building Monday night were very well attended by the men leaders of Scouting in Polk County. At 6 o’clock a Scout leaders Training Course was held at which there were 30 in attend ance, at 7 o’clock a supper meet ing of the iScouters Club was held after which the Court of Honor met in the auditorium. The meeting opened with prayer by Rev. Homer E. Brady, follow ed with the repeating of the Scout oath. Several announcements were made, after which the following Scouts were advanced in rank: Tenderfoot: Charles Arledge, Jesse E. Fisher, J. L. Fisher, Franklin McKaig, Troop 1, Tryon. Second Class: Rochelle Coggins, Babbs Hamilton, Roy Jack, Jackie Walker, Troop 1, Mill Spring; Larry Wilson, Troop T, Columbus. First Class: Thomas Arledge, William Riddle, Wiley White, Tryon. Senior Scout: Raymond Ander son, S.S.S. Sea Hawk, Billy Mc Kaig, Ligon Flynn, Tryon. Civics; Ligon Flynn, Bill Bak er, Tryon. Cooking: Larry Moore, Colum bus troop; Joe Raymond Stephen son, Saluda troop. Farm Home Planning: Nick Eg erton, Mill Spring troop. Firemanship: Larry Moore, Co lumbus.
