THURSDAY, FEB. 20TH, 1947 Weather Wednesday: High 67, low 35, rain .19 . . . Sleet covers all Western North Carolina and upper South Carolina this morn ing. Weatherman Creasman says this is caused by rain from a warm layer of air freezing as it [ drops through a cold layer. And since the temperature is around 30 degrees it is sticking on the ground. There is a heavy snowfall around Asheville .... Tryon Post Office will be closed Satur day in honor of George Wash ington’s birthday .... Tryon Rotarians and Kiwanians who the speeches of Miss Lavinia C^PJlie and Garland Goodwin on World Peace, will be interested to know that Miss Greene won out in the contest put on by the high school. Those voting were not told to judge on delivery or content of speeches and the audiences voted as they would in listening to any speaker. Mdss Greene is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Greene. Miss Myrtle Baldwin, who directed the con test in the school is to be con gratulated also for her work. At torney Ryan McCown donated the .gold medal for the Bar Associa tion .Tryon Bank & Trust Company will close all day Satur _ Continued on Back Page MISS GREENE WINS ORATORICAL CONTEST Miss Lavinia Greene was award ed the Bar Association medal in the oratorical contest on World Peace at the High Sichool assemb ly at the Tryon school Wednesday. The medal was presented by Ryan MfcCown, who has directed the local contest. All the Ameri can history and civics students paticipated in this contest, writ ing essays on the subject, “Is World Government the Way to World Peace?” From these es says judges selected the six best. Other judges then selected the two best from these six. The win ners, Lavinia Greene and Garland Goodwin, delivered their arguments before the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs. Mtiss Greene was declared the winner as the result of secret ballots cast by the members of these clubs.—School Reporter. SPEAKER ON PLASTICS AT ROTARY FRIDAY Dr. Coleman Waller, professor of chemistry and science at Spar tanburg Junior College, will be the guest speaker at the Tryon Rotary Club on Friday at Oak Hall. R. B. White has charge of the pro gram. MEETINGS POSTPONED The P.-T. A. will not meet this afternoon. New date will be an nounced later. The Baptist Business Women’s Circle scheduled to meet with Mrs. Elbert Arledge today, has been postponed.
