“The inaugural Block House
Steeple-Chase, run at Tryon Sat
urday afternoon, was over an in
teresting course geographically.
The. course, perhaps a bit more
than one mile, is around a knoll on
which the ‘Old Block House’ now
standing, having been moved by
its present owner from its former
location, somewhat nearer the high
way. The line between North and
South Carolina passes through the
property. An old field stone is the
marker, standing just off the rid
ing course. On the north side of
the stone is ‘N. C.’ On the south
side, ‘S. C.’ The stone was erected
Sept. 15, 1818. When the riders
have made this course one time,
they have ridden out of North
Carolina into South Carolina and
back again. And they have ridden
through the territory of three
counties—Polk, in North Carolina,
Greenville and Spartanburg coun
ties, South Carolina. To pass this
property you cross the Southern
Railway at the ‘rock cut’ overhead
bridge, beyond Landrum. That was
the main highway before the pres
ent paved road was built. The
original ‘Old Block House’ was a
fort and stood on the line between
Spartanburg and Greenville coun
ties, which was the line betwteen
territory ceded to ‘the whites’ to
the east, and territory held by the
Cherokee Indians to the west.”—
