A big headline streamer across front page told of the victory. Here it is: quote— By Bob Steber In the Nashville Tennessean “It was a blaze of Bluisji at the wire at 5:15 yesterday after ,/^ton at Percy Warner Park as fleet brown mare of Austin "Brown, with the owner on the irons, raced to the championship of the 1947 and sixth running of the Iroquois Memorial Steeple chase. “The Tryon speedster fractured records in wholesale lots as she minced to the wire eased up, after negotiating the three miles and 18 jumps in five minutes and 39 seconds. That bested the track record of 5:42 and a fraction set by Rockmayne in winning the inaugural running of the classic in 1941. “T|hus Bluish, seven-year-old daughter of Impish out of Monie __wov.tinued on Back Page-i THREE GIRL SCOUTS TO GET TOP AWARDS Three Tryon girls, the Misses Anne Bowen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Bowen. Margo Hester, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Waverly M. Hester, and .AJine Poole, daugh ter of Col. and Mrs. T. S. Poole, will receive the coveted Curved Bar at the Girl Scout and Brownies Court of Awards in the Tryon School- auditorium at 8 o’clock this evening. The Curved Bar is to the Girl Scout what the Eagle Badge is to the Boy Scout, and the Quarter master Rating, to the Sea Scout. To earn a Curved Bar, the Girl Scout must be a First Class Scout and earn a minimum of 4 addition al badges in an elected new field. The bar is worn above her First Class badge. Tonight’s candidates for this high honor are among some 30 Girl Scouts and Brownies who will re ceive awards at this Court. The award emblems will be pre sented byJVfrs. Grenville S. Sewall, of Rye, N. Y., who is in Tryon es pecially for the occasion. Mrs. Sewall, a daughter-in-law of Dr. Charles G. Sewall, of Tryon, will also address the meeting on the national Girl Scout movement and its place in community activ ities. She is a member of the na tional field board, and of the na tiontl board of directors of the Girl Scouts. She is also Regional Chair man of the Hendrick Hudson District, which comprises the states of New York and New Jersey, the Panama Canal Zone and Puerto Rico.
