Joe Mr ’ien of the State Utilities Com i 3j£2on, Raleigh, was in Tryon Tcrasday consulting with local peo ple regarding the telephone situa tion. The telephone company asks for an increase in rates and a group of local people have asked for an improvement in service if j the rate increase is granted . . . . House of Representatives voted to reduce incomes taxes by four billion dollars, effective January 1. Congressman Bulwinkle voted in favor of the reduction. The vote was 302 to 112 .... The Lake Summit Playhouse is drawing a large number of Tryon people each night. “Love From A Strang er,” is being presented this week. . . . . . The Ladies Golf Tourna _Continued on Back Page- , County Commissioners Name Veterans Service Officer Woodrow Wilkins has been nam de County Service Officer to as sist the veterans of Polk County with any of their problems, ac cording to an announcement by Chairman R. E. Brantley of the Polk County Board of Commission ers. The County service officers have been installed in most coun ties of the nation where there are enough veterans to warrant the service. The Polk County Com missioners made the appointment Monday. Officer Wilkins will main tain an office in the court house and he will have other duties which will be announced later. county tax rate set At the meeting of the Polk County Commissioners on Monday the budget for the coming year was approved and the county-wide tax; rate set at $2.10, the same as last year. Chairman R. E. Brant ley stated that the Commissioners had hoped to reduce the rate this year but were unable to do so on account of additional expenses. An agricultural building is be ing built at Green Creek school, the only high school in the county to ir.*2t the qualifications required by the federal government, which is offering training to about 50 veterans. The special tax rate for Tryon School District is 35c which added to the $2.1o makes a total of $2.45. Chairman Brantley says work is going forward on the tax notices and that they hope to have them in the mails the latter part of July or first part of August.
