The other day when Costa’s Lily Flower Shop advertised Gladioluses in The Bulletin for '$1 . per dozen, we thought about how low the price for such beautiful flowers. But what got most attention from many readers was the word GLADIO LIF'TS. Some had never seen the md thought we had made a mistake. The ad only quoted what Webster’s dictionary calls them. One flower stem is a Glad iolus ; several are gladioluses. Of course the Latin plural is gladioli. The preferred pronunciation is to accent the letters “di” as you would die (gla-DIE-o-lus). The popular pronunciation is GLAD-ee O-lus. Anyway whatever yoou call them, they are beautiful and cheap at 10c" each . . . Larkin B.
