7 PRISONERS ESCAPE
FROM RUTHERFORD JAIL
Rutherfordton, July 29.—Sher
iff’s deputies today arrested Ben
Cooper of Rutherfordton and C.
B. Gussey of Spindale on sus
picion of aiding seven white pris
oners escape the Rutherford coun
ty jail this morning.
The fugitives sawed the bars on
one of the windows of their cage
and dropped three stories to the
ground on a rope made from blank
ets.
Gussey is a brother of Laurance
Gussey, 36, of Spindale, one of the
fugitives. Laurance was being held
on a charge of rape.
Police authorities in North and
South Carolina were alerted. All
seven were being held for the
November term ,of superior court.
The other escapees were listed
as:
Jessie Hoffman, 41, of Moores
ville, charged with rape.
Verlon Wright, 23, no permanent
address, charged with rape.
Tommy Tesspeer, 30, of Lowell,
Gaston county, charged with rape.
Charles Anderson, 32, Moores
boro, Cleveland county, charged
with larceny of an automobile.
Garland Smith, 23, and his broth
er, Durham Smith, 19, of Golden
Valley, Rutherford county, both
charged with assault with a deadly
weapon.
Jailer W. H. Griffin said the pris
oners had last been seen at 1:30
a. m. and the break was not dis
covered until three hours later.—
