Editor Tryon Bulletin:
With no thought of starting a
controversy, may I suggest to the
city council, or to the proper au
thority, that beginning with the
first plane, or sycamore tree at the
lower end of Chestnut Street all
trees on the right except the
maples be removed. All of the
planes, except^he first, are irreg
ular, or somewhat dwarfed and
they are short lived. Because of
dominating trees on private prop
erty, even the maples, if left alone
will have difficulty reaching ma
turity, but now their struggle for
existence is hopeless.
Even for the good sycamore at
the foot of the street there are
compensating trees on either side
of the street and that one good
one is one too many. Let us sac
rifice some of the trees now for
the sake of a better street three
to five years hence.—Contributed.
The Davis apple orchard at
Saluda, N. C., is out on the road
from Saluda to Greenville, about 3
miles, and is probably the best
cared for orchard in that region.
Mr. Davis tells me he has the
best crop he has had in years, but
“the most expensive”. That’s the
orchard that had apples 2 years
ago when no other orchard up
there had a crop. My friend, Mr.
J. A. Tillinghast, once owned the
orchard just beyond. Mr. Davis
bought what was known as the
“Bailey” orchard from Jesse Boyd
and Ben Hill Brown, and after he
bought it realized there was no
water on it and he had an in
teresting time finding water, by
sinking wells.—C. O. Hearon in
