COUNTRY CLUB NEWS
At the annual meeting of the
Tryon Golf & Tennis Club the
members accepted the resignation
from the Board of Directors of
Montgomery Whaling, with great
regret and sincere appreciation of
his many services to the club.
There is no complete record of
what he has done but where ter
mites had eaten away the wooden
foundation on which the club house
stood, and when the building was
about to settle to the ground, he
Iput in a stone foundation. This
^called attention to the water which
poured down the slope behind, most
ly into the ceilar, and provision
was made to divert the flow. Then
the wooden flooring of' the porch
began to weaken and it was re
placed with cement, which required
a large fill to supply it. Stone,
steps were added and stone edging
for the pathways.
The addition to the Pros’ house,
the new tool house and the Edgar
Rowe Memorial Fountain were
built by him and for all of these
improvements Mr. Whaling en
gaged the workers, ordered the ma
terials, personally supervised the
work, and then paid many of, the
bills.
The savings in architects’ and
contractors’ fees made for further
economies and the main building
jfvas given a new and much needed
^ease of life.
Fortunately Mr. Whaling has re
signed only from the Board, not
from the -Club.
Mrs. Ernst Mahler of Neenah,
Wis., will arrive today for a stay
at her Tryon home, Chinquapin
Farm.
