C&ngra -Continued on Back P<!>94.--_ AT ROTARY FRIDAY Theo Kerhulas had charge of the Tryon Rotary Club program Friday and gave an outline of some of his experiences in Iceland when he was a captain in the army while stationed there. Capt. Kerhulas stated that Ice land was a volcanic rugged island with variable weather conditions subject to change in 15 minutes from rain to snow to sunshine. The purpose in occupying the island during the war was to keep the Germans from getting it for a weather observation base. Iceland, he said has enjoyed a democratic form of government for about 1,000 years and is the oldest democracy similar to Ameri ca where free speech and other privileges are enjoyed. After the marriage bands were lifted by the U. S., many marriages took place between the natives and American troops . Wood is very precious on the island where there are no , trees and when timber is washed ashore from a shipwreck the owner of the land claims it as if it were gold. Many of the nouses are" built half below the ground and half above. The shortest day in the year lasts about 30 minutes: And life gets monotonous unless work and entertainment is provided. Much of the American shipping was routed near Iceland on its way to Murmask and it was near there that many of the American ships were torpedoed by the Ger mans . Guests at the meeting included Rotarians Fred Crumley of Hen dersonville; eneral E. P. King Jr. of Saluda; and Dr. George Farrand Taylor of Tryon.
