POLIO FUND OVER $1,000 Chairman Craig Thomas reports that Farthing & Swann is the second business firm in Tryon to contribute 100% to the Polio Cam paign. Mrs. F. W. Sprague, treasurer, reports total collections of $1,017.95 including a check for $157.66 from the Adams-Millis Corp., employees and the following new donors: Mrs. B. King Couper, Mrs. Hortense Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Feder, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Mapes, Miss Nancy McLeod, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Power, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brent, Mrs. Capen Harwood, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Law rence Mazzanovich, Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Derby, Miss Austin Wilcox. Democrats Quota Reached Carroll P. Rogers, chairman of the executive committee of the Polk County Democratic party, re ports that Polk County’s quota for the Jefferson-Jackson dinner had been contributed by promi nent Democrats throughout the county, and that the money had been forwarded to State headquar ters. POLIO HOSTESSES Perry Coggins, chairman of the Square Dance committee has an nounced the appointment of the following hostesses for the square dance to be given at Oak Hall on Saturday night for the benefit of the Polio Fund: Mrs. Craig Thom as, Miss Clara Edwards, Mrs. Stan ley Walkowicz, Mrs. Roy T. Bais den, Miss Libby Vining, Mrs. Gaden Corpening, Mrs. Nelson Jackson III, Mrs. Robert MjcFar land, Mrs. Bennett Hinsdale, Mrs. Roy Heavner. Carl Malski was called to Bos ton last Friday on account of the death of his mother, Mrs. Caroline Malski, on Thursday. Carroll P. Rogers has returned from Raleigh where he attended a conference of the commission appointed to restore Tryon’s Palace at New Bern. Distinguished Visitors Here Hon. James F. Byrnes and Mrs. Byrnes of Spartanburg, General and Mrs. Lucius D. Clay of Ashe ville and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown of Spartanburg were guests at a dinner party at The Auberge in Trydn Tuesday night. LIVESTOCK SCHOOL FOR POLK COUNTY County Agent Paul Culberson has announced that a livestock school for all fanners and others interested in livestock improve ment will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Columbus school, beginning at 10 a. m. Mr. Culberson says that farmers in Polk County are turning more and more to keeping livestock as a means of supplementing their in comes and maintaining soil fertility through the use of manure. This one day school is scheduled to give farmers more information on prac tical management of beef cattle, hogs, and sheep along with infor mation on the outlook for profit able returns in livestock farming, and the control of diseases and parasites. The program will include a re view of the Polk County^ livestock situation by Paul Culberson, Out look Information by John Winfield of the N. C. Dept, of Agriculture. Practical Feeding and Manage ment of Beef Cattle, Swine and Sheep by L. I. Case, Jack Kelley, and Sam Buchanan of the State Extension Service. In addition there will be an interesting sound movie relating to livestock feed ing. All farmers are invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. James Gray Moore and children have returned to Co lumbia, S. after a visit with Mr. and Mrs'. Jim Moore. Frank Hart and Floyd Daniel of Landrum are attending the Ruritan convention in Myrtle Beach, S. C. Applications for Social Securi ty Cards may be obtained at the local post office.
