LIBBY’S LINES
One of the loveliest golf courses
anywhere in the country is the
picturesque 18-hole golf course at
Linville, less than a three hours
drive _from Tryon. The out of
bound markers on so many of the
holes are split rail fences bordered
with flowers and green lawns of
the lovely summer homes situated
along side the fairways. Parallel
to No. 2 tee is the home of the
E. C. Griffiths of Charlotte. Mrs.
Griffith who was chairman of the
Linville Women’s Invitational
Tournament shoots in the 70’s and
low 80’s, consistantly and contrib
utes to the success of the Linville
and Charlotte Invitationals each
year. As a frequent visitor to
Tryon, Mrs. Griffith has played
Try.on’s golf course and participat
ed in the Duplicate Bridge tour
namtjnis. oome oi me oanKS oi,
the mountain streams running
through the Linville course are
built of rock and others are, ter
raced with logs, while foot bridges
crossing over them take you
through rhododendron and laurel
in full bloom, overhanging the
water. Grandfather Mountain,
which is said to be the oldest
mountain in the world, keeps a
watchful eye over the. small sum
mer resort town which hasn’t even
a grocery store. A delivery truck
comes each day and goes from
house to house with fresh vege
tables and fruits. Traditional
Eseeola Lodge is still the center
of events offering its guests golf,
riding, tennis, swimming, and boat
ing, and one of the 6 telephones
in Linville. Ths summer cottage
colony-is an ideal spot for a peace
ful and . restful vacation in the
mountains; and for golfers, it’s a
; paradise. f
