ers. When President Matt O’Shields
sent out letters for renewal sub
scriptions to the Chamber of Com
merce, the response was imme
diate from many sources and act
ed as a tonic to boost the direc
tors and committees to work even
harder. These directors' and offi
cers not only pay the regular dues
but also give a lot of their time
and their own money. They attend
meetings, pay for meals, and use
their cars for community better
ment. That’s why we have such
a grand community. A few people
have been doing it for years, but
the time has come for more people
to join in the responsibilities of
community development if we go

secretary of Evangelism for the
North Carolina State Convention
is to be the preacher.
Dr. C. E. Scarborough, pastor
of the Tryon church said Wed
nesday, ‘Dr. Canipe is a man of
wide u«d varied experience. Be
fore going to his present work he
served for 12 years as pastor of
the First Baptist Church in Boone.
While at Boone he began working
with the mountain preachers, lead
ing them in their study and prep
aration to preach. When the State
