It’s Colonel Ward Now
William C. Ward Jr., son of Mr.
and Mrs. W. C. Ward of Tryon
has been promoted from major to
heutenant-colonel in the U. S.
Marines at Camp Lejeune, accord
ing to a report in the service bul
letin. Colonel Ward was 31 years
old Christmas Day. But he was
a lieutenant-colonel at 30. When
he was made major eight years
ago he was the youngest in h’s
branch of the service. Col. Ward
is an Eagle Boy Scout, a graduate
of Tryon High School and of
Georgia Tech.
Tryon had a very quiet Christ
mas, except for jolly parties and
fanrly gatherings. Even the hos
pital had fewer people than usual.
One of the nicest parties of the
holidays was that given by Mr. and
Mrs. Ryan McCown in honor Miss
Hot MilFkin of Charlotte. . . All
the churches and Sunday schools
had Christmas programs and the
radios filled the air waves with
Christmas songs and plays .. . Good
deeds here and there by various
individuals will be recorded in the
books by the angels and the indi
viduals will 1 ve through l:fe richer
in the thought that they have
brought some extra happiness into
the lives of others.
5<$\>lk soldier killed
IN FIGHT ON SUNDAY
Grover McGinnis, 40, died in a
hospital here Monday about 2:30
a. m., of injuries received in a
light with Jake O’Sullivan, ac
cording to Sheriff Loyd Panther.
The fight took place Sunday af
ternoon. McGinnis, a sold.er home
on furlough and O'Sullivan, a
former Navy man, are said to have
engaged in an argument over the
two branches of services and the
fight ensued, according to Sheriff
Panther.
The altercation occurred in Mill
Spring in the vicinity of the two
men’s homes.
Polk County Coroner Otis Dal
ton said after viewing the body
at McFarland’s Funeral Home
in Tryon, the dead man’s injuries
showed that he had been beaten
severely about the head and indi
cations also revealed bruises about
the chest and abdomen.
Coroner Dalton has set ah in
quest into the death of McGinnis
for Wednesday at 4 p. m., in Mc
Farland Funeral Home in Tryon.
Sheriff Panther has summoned
the following men fo serve on the
jury: J. W. Durham, N. L. W'lson,
Arthur Pack Grady Russ, Walter
Honemann and Sam Lankford.
O’Sullivan was taken into custody
soon after the fight and taken to
Polk County Jail in Columbus to
await the outcome of the coroner s
inquest.
Both O’Sullivan and McGinnis
are married men. The deceased is
survived by a wife and two ch l
dren, his parents and several
brothers arid sisters.
Funeral arrangements were in
complete today
The body was taken to the Black
well Funeral Home at Chesnee. S
C., on Christmas Day.
