Bill Ridings of Finger ville community was killed Monday in an auto crash when his car left the road, hit a bank and turned over on him. Patrolman Buck Boyles arrested a young man Mon day for driving with a learner’s permit without a licensed operator in the car with him. Laws are getting strict in order to save lives if possible. In many cities driving lessons are being given to people who have been driving for years. . . . Thursday being: a holiday Wed nesday is the last day before Fri day to do your banking: and post office business . . . Wednesday is al so the date for the new bridge and canasta entertainment at the Lanier Library for the benefit of the library. Each table makes up its own rules, either rubber bridge or canasta. . . . Virgil B. Evans Jr., formerly of Spartanburg and summer resident of Tryon, has been named manager of a Greens boro radio station . . . Henry Bad gett of Spartanburg has been named chairman of evacuation and civilian war aid by the County Civil Defense Chairman Opie L. Shelton . . . SCOUTS ADVANCE HERE The Polk County Boy Scout Court of Honor was held Monday night at Tryon school with Ad vancement Chairman J. T. Arledge presiding. Others on the court were R. H. Millikin, B. B. Flynn, R. M. Schiele, Seth M. Vming, Elbert H. Arledge arid W. D. Prather. The meeting was opened with prayer by R- H. Brady and Scout Executive and County Chairman assembly in the Scout Ooath. An nouncements were made by the Executive and Country Chairman Elbert H. Arledge. Plans were dis cussed concerning a proposed local overnight camp for Scouts and the coming campaign to collect clothing for the millions of homeless people in Europe and Asia. Advancements were made as fol lows: Cooking, Edward Howard and Preston Pittman; farm home and its planning, Harold Gallimore; firemanship, Tommy Arledge; first aid, Carl Pace and Shields Flynn; home repairs. Jack Butler; path finding, Phil Hamrick; public health, Ted Newhall; reading, Shields Flynn; scholarship, Philip Hamrick; second class rank, Mere dith Wilson, Gerald Gosnell and James Ballew; star rank, Harold Gallimore. Field Trials Saturday The Bird Dog Field Trials will be held Saturday if it doesn’t rain, according to Chairman Horace Newman. If the weather is good the event will be held as pre viously arranged. More than 50 million chicks are started in the State each year.
