(Special Reporter)
Mrs. Thomas W. Butler, who
before her marriage was Miss Etta
Myrtle Sanders, daughter of Mrs.
Joseph Sanders and the late Mr.
Sanders of Polk County, N. C., is
a very special student at High
Museum and School of Art in At
lanta. Mrs. Butler has been found,
guilty by a jury, of creating sev
eral lovely paintings and has sen
tenced her works to be hung in the
Atlanta Art Assn. Gallery in Sicott
Memorial building of Atlanta. The
jury is composed of faculty mem
bers of High Museum School of
Art and is a newly instituted sys
tem of judging pictures for dis
play. Only pictures that will bring
credit to the artist and the Mu
seum receive favorable verdicts.
Each artist member of the Art
Association is invited twice a year
to submit four pictures to bd
judged for a month's showing in
the gallery. This was the first
time Mrs. Butler submitted any
of her paintings for judgment. The
three pictures were of still life.
One was a water color of a vase
of dried magnolia leaves, love
apples and pears. Another was of
magnolia leaves and seed pods
done in black, white, and grey
tempo. The third picture theme
included a vase, water pitcher,
grapes, an apple and a squash
in front of various colored folds.
Mrs. Butler comes from an ar
tistic family. She has a sister,
Mrs. Mazie Sanders. Martin, of
California, who is an art instruc
tor. Both Mrs. Butler and Mrs.
Martin write poetry. Their father,
Joseph Sanders, painted lovely sun
sets without having taken lessons.
