Those desiring to help the flood stricken areas in the Western States may mail contri butions to the American Red Cross, Tryon, or leave at the Try on Bank & Trust Co., or the Bulle tin office. Mrs. Gladys Culberson, the secretary, states that Polk County, did not meet its quota during the annual Red Cross drive, arid that this will give many peo ple an opportunity to help now. 80 Red Cross shelters are in op eration, 42,000 people are being 17,000 families are registered fljnth the Red Cross as needing ?selp. 500 million dollars is need ed for rescue work according tio President Harriman, and Polk County is being ashed' to give $6,000 to this worthy couse. All funds collected during this emer gency will be sent to area head quarters . . Leonard C. Porter will be in charge of the Tryon Kiwanis club program Tuesday at 1 p. m. at Oak Hall hotel . . Tryon women golfers are completing their tourn ament this week for the Cairns Handicap Trophy . . . Pro Ted Pox took a number of junior players to Charlotte this riiorning to play golf in preparation for the jun ior tournament to be h«id there ....continued on Back Page_ CUBS BUY POLK MAN James Whitesides of Green’s Creek has been signed by Forest Hunt Scout for the Chicago Cubs, to play with the R. C. Owls Base ball team for the balance of the season. It is not known definitely whether he will qualify as a start ing pitcher but he will become a regular member of the squad at once. I Whitesides, who is 20 years old, stands about six ■ feet and weighs around 175 pounds, has developed mto an excellent pitcher. His re cord this season, while pitching for Columbus in the Blue Ridge Base ball league, is 6 wins, and one loss with 4 shutouts. Tryon is th® only team in the league to defeat him. He received a very generous contract and, if he can make the grade, will <be in a good position to advance. He is able to throw a knuckle-ball with a side arm motion, an art almost hitherto unknown.—J.O.£|. Mr. and Mrs. Wm H. Flentye of Aurora Illinois and their daugh ter Mrs. Tom, Moore nee Barbara Flentye of Louisville, Ky are here for a few days visiting Miss Mae Flentye. Mr and Mrs. Clarence Daven port of Clearwater, Fla. are visit ing Mrs. ,C. I>. Davenport. Col and Mrs. Barrett Rogers have returned to their Tryon ) home from Des Plains, 111. Rev. and Mrs. Orville H. White have arrived in Tryon and are occupying the Falconer house while the Congregational manse is being completed. Mir.
