This week’s July 28th Saturday Evening Post has an interesting ar ticle by Margaret Culkin Banning of Tryon and Duluth, on “These Fund Thrives are Getting Me Down” The author reports the statements made by many people that they are tired of so many drives for money. Mrs. Banning points out that it is up to each individual to determine how much he shall'give of time and money to various causes, for the gift without the giver is bare, and thayn order to enjoy the spirit of t||^Kood Samaritan, the cause nW have the sympathy and in terest of the donor. We must learn to budget our gifts and our time. These oppunities for voluntary ser vice help to keep the country free and enable us to good things of our own free will. It is up to each of us to decide whether the money we give is going to the cause we want to help. Mrs. Banning (Mrs. LeRoy Salsich) is an authority on social and public welfare problems and is an outstanding leader in many civics causes for the uplift of humanity. . ... It seems fitting to provide something more comfortable for resting or looking over the mail. The result is not a finished pro ject, and advice and criticism are welcomed—an especially the loan of a good table. The very nice chairs are a gift from Tryon’s most be loved merchant.. —An Observer A Home Friendly Letter Frankfurt, Germany July 20, 1951 Dear Friends of Polk County, N I received your letter of July. I was very glad to hear from home. I haven’t written you before now. _I have been here in Germany ever since the 29th of May. I have seen a good many interesting things over here but nothing to compare to those of good old Polk County. Your letter said Joseph Owens by "was here. We are just a few ! buildings apart. It is very nice to i have someone around you know. He and I get together quite often and talk about things here. We are kept in close to the area so we can be ready if anything should come about. We are about 350 miles from the Russian border. I am not much of a letter writ er but keep the news coming and I will keep in touch with you. Sincerely, Robert Ormand
