Club will be announcing their fall
activities and various clubs that
have been inactive during the sum
mer will be in full blast. Kiwanfs,
Rotary, Lions and Chamber of
Commerce are sponsoring a 4-H
Calf Show to be held at Harmon
Fieia Monday, September 16th, at
12:30. About $200 is needed for
prizes for the young people. Matt
O’Shields is chairman of the fi
nance committee. $5 each from 40
people will raise sufficient money
for the prizes. The civic club
members have agreed to eat with
the 4-H Club members next Mon
day in lieu of their regular meet
ing .A food sale for the
benefit of St. Luke’s Hospital Aux
iliary will be held Friday, Sent.
7th, beginning at 9 o’clock at Bal
lenger’s. Mrs. Harkness Smith is
chairman of the committee . . . To
day is a big day for the Conser
eation and Development program
in this area. Secretary of Agri
culture Charles F. Brannan will
speak in Spartanburg at the Fair
Grounds at 2 p. m., to farmers from
22 communities. Prices amounting
to $22,000 will be given winning

General King Speaker At
Mill Spring On Thursday
General E. P. King Jr., of Salu
da and Brunswick, Ga., will be
the guest speaker Thursday night
at 8 at the Mill Spring Ruritan
Club ladies night program to be
held at the Mill Spring school. It
will also be Faculty Night at which
time members of the school faculty
will be guests of the club. Mem
bers of the club will also have as
guests their wives and sweethearts.
General King who was in com
mand of the Philippine Forces that
had to surrender at Bataan was
taken prisoner by the Japs and
suffered the hardships of several
Jap prison camps. His vivid de
stription of the attitudes of the
people of Asia and his own atti
tude toward those people have
made him a popular civic club
speaker throughout this area and
other sections of the Southeast.

Herbert Ravenel Slass, noted au
thor of a number of books and
wildlife stories that have appeared
in the Saturday Evening Post, con
ducts in the Charleston News and
Courier a column, “Woods and
Waters” in which he had the fol
lowing Mbnday morning:
“Charlie (Woods Rider) West is
starting a hunting, fishing and
conservation column in The Polk
County News published at Tryon,
N. C., and that’s a good piece of
news.
“For a long while Charlie West
has been a stalwart and effective
champion of conservation in the
